Bikeability Level 1 & 2 - Supporting the home school children community.

For chidlren aged 9 - 12, the equivalent to Year 5 - Year 7 school years. . 

This combined course helps riders to first develop good bike handling skills in a traffic free environment. Riders must be able to cycle (i.e. pedal and glide) to participate in this course. Once ready the riders will they be led out on to quiet local roads to continue to develop their skills allowing them to confidently cycle on quieter roads, understanding simple junctions and interact with other road users. 

How is the course delivered?

  • Level 1 will take place at the Tudor Grange Cycle Track which is traffic free. This session will be 60 minutes.
  • For Level 2 the instructors will lead the riders out to quiet local roads and junctions suitable for the groups ability. The riders will have one 60 minute session and two 90 minutes sessions to cover all the key skills.

What will the children Learn?

  • Prepare themselves for a journey
  • Check the cycle is ready for a journey
  • Set off, pedal, slow down and stop
  • Pedal (including looking behind, cycling one handed, turning and controlling speed)
  • Cycle safely and responsibly
  • Identify and respond to hazards
  • Start and stop on-road journeys
  • Maintain suitable riding positions
  • Share the road with others and communicate with other road users
  • Comply with signals, signs and road markings
  • Manage risk when cycling
  • Negotiate junctions (pass side roads, turn at T junctions and cross roads and roundabouts if present)
